Coca-Cola has been conducting a social experiment to see how honest people are. It involves setting up cases of Honest Tea, one of their products, at $1 per bottle and using the honor system to collect payments. Alabama and Hawaii were the most honest states. Women were more honest than men. Blondes and brunettes were the most honest. Interestingly, people were more honest in groups than by themselves. You can see the Honesty Index here.
Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the Lord, and my judgment is passed over from my God?
When I heard about this experiment it reminded me of what I have been reading in Isaiah, this verse in particular. The people who conducted the experiment knew the actions of the “participants” but only because they set up the whole thing. God is aware of everything that everyone is doing at all times. This can be a source of comfort or guilt depending on your attitude towards God.
For believers in Christ we are challenged to also be obedient His commandments, especially when no one else is around. Those are the times when temptation can be the most difficult to resist. While we do not have to be perfect we do have to avoid hypocrisy. It is about the integrity of our commitment to follow Jesus. Those moments show us whether we are putting on a show for others or sincere about our convictions. We want to get to the point where we act the way we think.
